The Art of Self is a powerful transformative learning experience for people who want to be an effective instrument of change in their groups, organizations and communities.
In a group of peers, you are invited to step into your power and agency to practice facilitating change. Focusing on your own learning goals, you will hone your craft of interpersonal and group dynamics skills over several days. You will practice holding the complexity of mindfulness and compassion for yourself while being present with intra-personal, interpersonal and group level processes. You will deepen self-awareness about how you influence the group while expanding your range of conscious choices.
This retreat is unique. To cultivate awareness of self and other and to experience antidotes to dominant Euro-centric cultural patterns, we will engage in movement-based expressive arts and experiential learning in nature, as well as be in T-group. In this special place, loosening the influence of institutional cultural constraints, we will explore who we are becoming.
Participants will be supported to develop their own learning goals, such as the following:
The course is highly experiential. The learning journey includes 40 hours of experiential learning, introduction to models and tools, and direct interaction with other participants.
Coaching: Participants will receive a coaching session before the weekend and a coaching session after the weekend with Pien Van Den Herik or Tiffany von Emmel. The Pre-weekend Coaching session focuses on identifying your goals for the weekend and the Post-Weekend Coaching focuses on applying your learnings from the weekend.
Who should attend?
We encourage facilitators, consultants, catalysts for change, and helping professionals from different backgrounds to attend. The pre-requisite is experience in facilitating a group. Our acceptance process is geared towards creating a diverse group.
Known as "Fiori", the retreat land includes a beautiful main cabin and newly built barn guest house at the end of a country road, cocooned on a hill, surrounded by a redwood forest. For decades, facilitator gatherings have been held here. There are a variety of sleeping arrangements -- loft beds, sofa beds, a futon bed, cots for sleeping bags, and outside spaces for camping on the deck and near the pond. The bathrooms are shared.
The meals will be healthy, plant-based and fish meals. Gluten-free, dairy-free, and no sugar options will be available.
Thursday 10am - 9pm
Friday 9am - 9pm
Saturday 9am - 9pm
Sunday 9am - 12pm
Please give yourself plenty of time to travel so that we can start at 10am on Thursday. You also have the option to arrive on Wednesday evening after 5pm. If you are flying in, we recommend that you fly in on Wednesday to avoid Thursday morning traffic from the airport. After registration, we will give you access to an online ridesharing board, where you can put your contact info and directly contact participants to coordinate ridesharing.
To support our goals of fostering inclusion and to form a diverse group, we offer an affordably priced sliding scale fee of $500-$1500. Please pay at the highest level of the sliding scale that you can afford. This allows others who need to pay less the opportunity to attend. A partial scholarship and a payment plan over time are available.
What participants say:
Facilitation was excellent. I felt safe and cared for and was able to go deep and stretch into my learning goals, as well as develop new learning goals as I progressed through the weekend training. Overall a beautiful growth experience that left me with a feeling of gratitude.
You are masterful in the way you can skillfully facilitate the group between levels, from intra-personal to inter-personal to group level, and generate an effective outcome. This has been a great learning for me.
So caring for the people in the group and meeting an unbelievable range of people emotionally, which was fantastic. It created such a safe space for everyone. You are really good at repair. You were... such a model for me. I felt so lucky to have you as a facilitator.
Your compassion for others is so remarkable and runs so deep, your care. In a very positive way, you exhibited such an array and depth of emotion. To learn that was so helpful.
